5/24/2023 0 Comments 2015 play by paula vogelHowever, Peck is not cast wholly as a villain, nor does Li’l Bit always reject his advances. It also illuminates how women are molded and manipulated not only by their abusers but by society at-large. Well-received by critics as well as survivors of sexual assault, the play addresses sexual double standards women face and how women are often blamed for their own abuse. Each scene is designated a driving rule that also reflects the life lesson Li’l Bit learns therein. Through non-chronological flashbacks, Li’l Bit, now in her forties, uses learning to drive as a metaphor for her learning about sex, and about life, from her aunt’s husband, Peck, with whom she has a sexual relationship. It addresses pedophilia, victim blaming, and misogyny, as well as the complexities of love and family. How I Learned to Drive, a play written by Paula Vogel, premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1998. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The Bloody Tide by Jane YolenJane Yolen, often called "the Hans Christian Andersen of America," is the author of over 340 books, including Owl Moon and The Devil's Arithmetic. Far away on the East Coast of America I felt the heat of it burning my cheeks. In "Fahrenheit," Yolen protests the burning of her book because a character is gay: Before the arson could be stopped, a year of my writing went up in flames. We were warned, we did not listen, and the teeth are at the back of our necks. Yeats set it all down first: that bloody tide of change and not-change, that bloody intensity of right and not-right, the beast stalking the presidency down the twisty, blackened capitol streets. From "Listening to the News Reminds Me of Yeats". These powerful poems, born from wisdom and composed with assured artistry, stand as bold and memorable witnesses to ourtroubling and troubled times. Jane Yolen's new collection of 55 poems about politics and power, her compassionate "songs of protest", confront our most tragic contemporary and historical human experiences: the Holocaust, the Boston Marathon bombings, Newtown, and Aurora massacres, global warming, endless Middle East violence-each poem is a plea for justice and a statement of moral imperative. 5/24/2023 0 Comments I Hate You by Ilsa Madden-MillsHad I listened to this book first I would have DNFd as well. I guess reading her books first, I have the chance to love the H/h at my reading pace and hear their voices in my head in a tone that is pleasing to me. I could not have despised the heroine more. I made the mistake of not reading Not My Romeo first and just going straight to listening. I can honestly say that every book Ilsa Madden-Mills has written that I have read first, I have absolutely loved. Poor narrators can ruin a book I loved when read You do not have to have listen to I Dare You first. There are lots full of great options for fantasy lovers, but Once Upon a Broken Heart is one of the most appealing, thanks to its constantly churning plot, its real sense of adventure, and the lovely heroine at the center of the story. Garber continues to show up with lush, atmospheric writing and charming characters that we can't help but want to journey with until their final scene." - "A magical confectionery mix of love, messy choices, and dreams of happy endings. The #1 New York Times bestseller A Goodreads Choice Award finalist An Indie Next pick "An explosively rich fairy tale that takes place inside an intricate world that's weaved with fast-paced plot and intriguing twists. There have been two film adaptations and a stage play, as well as sequels, prequels and retellings penned by both Andrews and Andrew Neiderman, the ghostwriter who took on Andews’ mantle after her death. Andrews’ gothic tale of incest, poisoning and dark family secrets has sold more than 40m copies. That “deranged swill” proved irresistible. I could have stopped you if I’d really wanted to.” Somehow, the incestuous teenagers acquire a romantic tinge: can Chris and Cathy escape, and will they make it as a couple despite everything that’s against them? They end up trapped in the attic for more than three years, where poisoned doughnuts kill off one of them, and where the overheated drama somehow leads Chris to rape his sister – but it’s fine, says Cathy, “you didn’t rape me. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Shacking Up by Helena HuntingEnemies-to-Lovers Romantic Comedy with Great Banter and Chemistryįrom their unconventional meet-cute until the very last page, I adored Rian and Pierce. Like Rian, he’s also dealing with family issues, namely, the huge mistake he made at his father’s company.Īs a lawyer, he’s used to making deals, but with Rian, that playbook gets thrown out the window. Pierce is Amelie’s brother (from Hooking Up) and he flips houses with their brother. They have overcome life-altering challenges imposed upon them by their less-than-law-abiding parents, and they’re working toward their goal of purchasing their own property to flip for profit.Īfter a case of mistaken identity in the grocery store, Rian is drawn to the egomaniacal stranger who both intrigues and infuriates her. Rian and her twin sister are real estate agents in the Hamptons. I also love the Shacking Up world that Helena has created and I Flipping Love You is another perfect addition to the series. I love Helena Hunting’s razor-sharp writing, her effervescent characters, and the ‘uniquely Helena’ storylines and dialog that only she can dream up. From the very first scene, I knew this book would be anything but a fixer upper! 5/23/2023 0 Comments Curious by rg alexanderHarlow, however, was skeptical of this theory and wanted to investigate the role of social contact and comfort in attachment. This was known as the “cupboard theory” of attachment. The studies had a significant impact on the field of psychology, as they demonstrated the profound impact that social and emotional deprivation can have on infant development.Īt the time of Harlow’s experiments, it was widely believed that attachment and bonding were solely based on the provision of food by the mother. The experiments involved separating infant monkeys from their mothers and exposing them to various surrogate “mothers” made of wire or cloth, which provided differing levels of comfort and food. Harry Harlow’s monkey love experiments were a series of controversial studies conducted in the 1950s and 60s that sought to understand the nature of attachment and the importance of social contact for infant monkeys. 5/23/2023 0 Comments The Brain Eaters by Gary BrandnerGary Brandner (Author of The Howling) - Goodreads Dennis Etchison once again proves himself to be one of the … WebGary Brandner's "Aunt Edith" is a witch who would just love to put her niece's new boyfriend to the test. As you might suspect from the follow-up to a Pick the Plot book, things don't necessarily make a lot of sense here. Tween characters have crushes and relationship misunderstandings with other tweens. A wonderfully moving memoir of addiction, art, determination and the search for a father she knew, and didnt know - the artist and the heroin addict. As earlier in the series, there's a lot of slapstick comic book violence, from the destruction of entire civilizations to bashing people with assorted weapons or hacking off instantly regrowing limbs. Parents need to know that the hefty Worlds Apart concludes James Riley's crazily imaginative Story Thieves series involving the "real" world, the fictional world, and the bad things that happen when the two are on the outs.
